Fax forms to the IRS and other agencies

Many government offices still list a fax number for forms. You don't need a fax machine: upload a PDF, type the number, and keep the delivery receipt.

Not tax or legal advice. Last checked: October 13, 2026.

Example: IRS Form 2848

Form 2848 lets someone (like a tax pro) speak to the IRS for you.

  • The IRS lists fax numbers for Form 2848 in the form's instructions. The right one depends on where you live.
  • If you fax it, it must be signed by hand (with a pen), then scanned. A typed or electronic signature is not accepted for a faxed copy.
  • The IRS also has an online way to submit this form. Use whichever is easier for you.

Before you send any form

  1. 1Get the fax number from the agency's own website or letter. Never from a search ad or a random site.
  2. 2Sign the way the agency asks. Some, like the IRS for Form 2848, need a pen signature on faxed copies.
  3. 3Put any page the agency asks for first (like their own cover sheet). Our cover page with your name and contact is added in front.
  4. 4Keep the delivery receipt and your original.

Questions people ask

Where do I find the right fax number?
Only on the agency's own website (for the IRS, that's irs.gov) or in the letter they sent you. Fax numbers often depend on your state or the type of form. Never use a number from a random website.
Do I need a fax machine?
No. Save your signed form as a PDF (a phone scan app works), upload it here, and type the agency's fax number. We do the dialing.
How do I know it arrived?
You get a delivery receipt when the agency's fax machine picks up the whole fax. Keep it with your records. It shows the fax arrived, not that the agency has processed it.
Is this safe for tax papers?
Your file is stored privately and deleted on the schedule on our Security page. Fax itself is an old phone technology, so only send what the agency asks for. Do not send medical records.
Should I fax or use the agency's website?
If the agency has an online upload, that is often faster. Fax is handy when the agency lists fax as an option, or when the online way doesn't work for you.
